I usually sketch it out first in a slightly larger size in openCanvas, reduce it to the size needed (100 x 100 most often) then I open it up in Graphics Gale and use their curved line tool to do the line art. Once the line art is done (since I still can't figure out the pallet in graphics gale) I load it up in photoshop to do the coloring.

Really love the top left and middle :) Left for managing to cram a lot of detail into a small space and the wings naturally, the mid because there's just so much personaility going there. I may be slightly biased in I cna't sprite myself but they're very nifty!
